A criticism that Latter-day Saints commonly make against Christian apologetics organizations is that non-Mormons cannot speak authoritatively about Mormonism. It is often said that "If you want to know what Mormonism teaches, ask a Mormon." It would make sense that "Gospel Principles," which is an official LDS Church manual, would provide authentic LDS teachings to inquirers. However, quotations from the book (which is often used by Mormon missionaries to introduce LDS doctrine to potential converts) prove that Christian criticism is supported by solid references.

One of the main problems when witnessing to a Mormon is to determine what he or she believes to be doctrinally true. The LDS Church has never been consistent as to how one may ascertain its official doctrine. Although some Mormons give their leaders wide latitude when it comes to spiritual direction, others insist that only the church's four "standard works" need to be accepted as truth. Still other Mormons take a type of postmodern approach and accept what they feel to be true as their test for doctrinal authenticity, thereby disregarding teachings that make them feel uncomfortable. Consequently, a Christian who hopes to dialogue successfully with a Mormon needs to understand how that Mormon determines what is true.
